Rasheed Ogunlaru: Happiness is not some ‘thing’ to be pursued, it is a way of being born from appreciating.

Being happy is an art. And come to think of it, being unhappy is also an art. Sometimes, we like to stay trapped in our unhappiness for no reason. Gradually seeking reasons to be unhappy becomes a habit — it becomes a regular obsession to talk about lack, how someone did not meet your expectations, let you down, and did not bother about your emotions and sorrow. Reasons surface in plenty and they seem genuine after soaking yourself in the ocean of unhappiness.

My mother chose to be unhappy, sad, and angry. I would often tell her to look at what people had done for her; to be happy in people’s presence, though they had let her down. But that would never be, she left this world a very unhappy person, filled with fault finding and negativity. That is so sad.

So, let’s learn to:

Seek pleasures in small things around us

Stay happy with what we are blessed with

Live life as if there is no lack

Keep a smile on, despite being in pain

Watch for the goodness in people, however minuscule it is

And more than anything else, stay in a state of ‘thankfulness’ as much as possible

Anthon St. Maarten: Happiness already exists in your life. All you need to do is tune into it. And you can start doing that right now.
